We live in complex times; now more than ever we need to find creative and innovative ways to address the future.

Both Cato and Michelle are Practitioners of the Art of Hosting a global movement for large group facilitation methodologies; a highly effective way of harnessing the collective wisdom and self-organizing capacity of groups of any size.  Based on the assumption that people give their energy and lend their resources to what matters most to them – in work as in life – our method of group facilitation blends a suite of powerful conversational processes to invite people to step in and take charge of the challenges facing them.

Having conversations that matter is critical to this process, which requires us to work with the stakeholders through an in depth process to find the right question to unlock the collective creativity. Then we blend together a range of collaborative methods – Circle, World Café, Appreciative Inquiry, Open Space Technology, Pro-Action Café and more – to open meaningful conversations that lead to insight, collective understanding and commitment.

Group facilitation is more than a suite of methods – it is also a practice.  It requires the creation and holding of the space and atmosphere for the conversations to happen, especially when views are polarised and passions run high. It also requires the results of the conversations to be harvested in a meaningful way, capturing data, ideas, sentiment and most importantly action.

Cato was also an early adopter of the Theory U methodology for social change created by C. Otto Scharmer from MIT, more lately Michelle has joined Cato bringing together Theory U with Organisational Systemic Constellations. These methodologies combine to help get beyond our blind spots and habitual thinking, so we can attune to what is trying to happen in the world around us and connect with the future that is emerging. (Theory U is complex so instead of a technically involved video here is one that is nice to watch!)

At Johansen, we believe these methodologies hold the key to unlocking the creative wisdom to provide answers to how to make a sustainable future for Guernsey’s economic and social needs. And to get really good at hosting requires practise, we would love to practise these methods locally and encourage you to get in touch to explore how we can help.

To date Johansen have hosted group facilitation events for the Deputies of the States of Guernsey, Health and Social Services Dept, Helse Nord (Norway), StartUp Guernsey, Creative Industries Guernsey, Aqualyng (Norway and Dubai), the Tony Carey Meetings Programme and we want to do much more. In addition the Women’s Development Forum founded by Michelle hosted 110 large group meetings between 2009 - 2017 based on the Art of Hosting principles.
